Independent Fansite for BBC Two's new drama about the 19th-century artists' lives, relationships and work
Rossetti and Lizzie return from their honeymoon, ready to settle into conventional married life, in the final episode of BBC Two’s drama following the lives and loves of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. However, when Millais proposes the idea of an artistic colony for the Brotherhood and their wives, Rossetti is immediately attracted by the bohemian notion of group living. Lizzie – used to Rossetti’s wandering eye – is less than enthusiastic.
True to form, within days of their return, Rossetti starts up a flirtation with William Morris’s wife, Jane Burden. Ruskin also abandons Lizzie, withdrawing his support for her art. As her life seemingly spirals out of control, Lizzie turns to the highly potent narcotic, laudanum, to numb her pain.
Hunt, meanwhile, sets out to win back Annie Miller, hoping to persuade her to move into Millais’s colony with him. He sends Fred to deliver his latest offer of marriage. Annie, unsurprisingly, has had enough of Hunt and tells Fred that she has no intention of accepting the proposal. Fred seizes his own chance of happiness and proposes to her himself, even though he’s still in love with Lizzie. Annie laughs off the offer, leaving Fred humiliated and vowing, in future, to always tell the truth, no matter how brutal.
When Fred chooses the fragile Lizzie as a recipient of one of his home truths, little can he imagine the devastating consequences…
Aidan Turner plays Dante Gabriel Rossetti; Amy Manson plays Lizzie Siddal; Samuel Barnett plays John Millais; Natalie Thomas plays Jane Burden; Tom Hollander plays John Ruskin; Rafe Spall plays William Holman Hunt; Jennie Jacques plays Annie Miller; and Sam Crane plays Fred Walters.
Desperate Romantics is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC’s High Definition channel, available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

It stormed the gates of hell
And reached beyond the stars
Mythical hero, bastard and villain,
The artist’s wooden mannequin
Dressed in ephemeral gown,
Adorned with a paper laurel crown.
It was Mars at war with Venus.
He was Dante seeking Beatrice.
“It’s because of you, I blame you”,
Was stapled to Lizzie’s heart.
Written through a laudanum haze,
In the house of life, her love betrayed.
In the gloom of Gabriel’s room,
His beautiful mind all broken, brutalised by emotion.
Weeping through eyes of soul,
Entangled in a web of woes.
Yearning for days of yore,
Lost amongst the bric a brac.
A sea of whiskey won’t drown the guilt,
When Ophelia imagined becomes too real.
No more light only darkness,
No more her; only madness.
Tormenting, reflecting him,
Shadows shroud the mannequin.
I was wondering, will there be a 7th episode? If the answer is yes, can we know how many will there be?
Because according to IMDB, Desperate Romantics is “over”. The last ep in there, is number 6, and there’s no info of a possible second season :S
I’ve watched only the first 2, but I loved it, and now I’m downloading the other 4 episodes, because where I am, is the only way for me to see it. (I’m in Spain)
Well…FINALLY a few other viewers are expressing opinions..I was beginning to think I was talking to myself!
Michael John Griffiths.loved the poem..assuming that you wrote it?
ok…I’ve loved this series and not only because the grrrr Aidan Turner got his kit off ..constantly..( his interview has given a whole new meaning to taking your socks off….)
Episode 6 had a bit too much in I think…it had enough content to spread over two episodes and was the episode which strayed the most away from the historical known truths…a shame that it wasn’t shown that Lizzie only committed suicide after the birth of a stillborn finally sent her over the edge. Found the ending a little odd..assuming that Peter thinks there will be a second series to answer questions of ‘ and what happened next to them all?.’
I think there’s enough story lines and drama left for a second series…I have loved Peter Bowker’s attempts to link 19thC with modern day angts ..so
BBC…do a second series..make sure it’s advertised better as a private lives romp/drama…get all the actors back…PLEASE IMPROVE THE WEBSITE TO ATTRACT A YOUNGER GROUP..and if anyone from the Production company/BBC wants to canvas my view please contact me.
Thank you Roisin -I did write the poem above.- I am an artist /poet.
It was written coincidently on Gabriel’s birthday.
I also noted how Lizzie’s stillborn child was omitted from the drama. Also Gabriel only rescued his book of poetry some 2 years after the burial of Lizzie – He had actually had tucked the book of poems into Lizzies hair within the coffin rather than throw it in. If a second series was to be done it would reveal Gabriel’s affair with Jane burdon/Morris and her eventual rejection of him.
Gabriel was a tragic character of his own making. He was obsessed with the idea that he was the reincarnation of the great Italian poet Dante and that Lizzie was Beatrice incarnate – he hints at this in his poem Sudden Light. Also in his painting of Lizzie on her death – The title is Beata Beatrice and in the background of this painting you can see Dante and Beatrice represented.
I was also checking here in the hope that there might be hint of a second series to come- I loved the romp ( and agree that Aidan Turner getting his kit off was a good reason for switching on!). I was really interested to hear about some of the historical innaccuracies- would be great to find out more in the next series… Come on BBC!
I utterly adored the series. I had no idea that Episode 6 was the last in the run – I turned on tonight expecting another delightful hour and am feeling very tragic at being denied it! Please please please please BBC make another series. This one was the most delightful piece of telly I have watched for years.
I agree with Blanche… Best thing on telly in years! We were gutted when we turned the telly on and it was not on! We did not realise it was only 6 parts & thetefore had finished! It’s such a shame- a second series is a must there are so many storylines 2expand on it seems inconclusive ending like this!
Can’t believe it work at tues night so was looking forward to i player tonight to see the next episode! One of the best dramas on tv for years
I was away and missed episode 6 and now its no longer showing on iplayer, its only been 8 days, surely they should have progammes on for a bit longer- gutted! What to do?
Carol..it’s still showing on the BBC Desperate Romantics website…but be quick..I think that today may be last day of showing….enjoy!
I loved the series and was disapointed that there were only 6 episodes. Sadly due to a huge drop in ratings after the 1st episode I doubt the beeb will make a 2nd series. But I REALLY hope they do.
Hi Roisin (and everyone else on this forum)
I have really fallen in love with the whole PRB. Thanks to this series the paintings I admired so much are now enhanced with a new, deeper dimension in my eyes.
I have read Franny Moyle’s book (from whence the series is inspired) and truly believe that there is material and scope for at least another series, with the whole Rossetti-Fanny/Rossetti-Jane-Morris/Morris-Georgiana-Ned/Ned-Maria Zambaco…triangles, with romps, lust, attempted suicides and artists driven insane by loved Muses.
I am also the Administrator for the Facebook group, where I have uploaded loads of stills from the series and photos of what the original “characters” looked like. Please join in and keep the momentum going…you never know what could happen next!
Quite disappointed Fred didn’t actually exist…
oops spelt my name wrong
